What Counts as a Hero’s Journey?
Not everything is a hero’s journey.
Let’s be clear:
- Doing something you’ve done 100 times before?
- Staying in your comfort zone?
But this?
- Moving somewhere new
- Starting a business
- Becoming a parent
- Facing a health challenge
- Trying something you’ve never done before
That’s a hero’s journey.
If it stretches you…
If it scares you…
If it changes you…
You’re in it.
The Big Idea: A Life Well Lived = Many Hero’s Journeys
Mythologist Joseph Campbell believed:
A meaningful life is made of one hero’s journey after another
It’s not about playing it safe.
It’s about repeatedly asking:
“Do I dare?”
And then… answering.
The Fork in the Road (Where Most People Get Stuck)
At some point, every hero faces a choice:
Path 1: The Known
- Safe
- Predictable
- Already mapped
Path 2: The Unknown
- Uncertain
- Risky
- Alive
Here’s the truth most people avoid:
If the path is clear… it might not be yours.
(Yeah. That one hits.)
Why This Story Shows Up Everywhere
The Hero’s Journey is everywhere because…
It’s us.
You see it in:
- Star Wars
- Kung Fu Panda
- Pretty much every story that actually moves you
Why?
Because we recognize ourselves in it.
We are the ones being called into something bigger.
The 3 Acts of the Hero’s Journey (Simple Breakdown)
You don’t need a textbook to understand this.
Here’s the simplified version:
Act 1: Departure
Your normal life gets disrupted.
You’re called into something new.
This is where you leave what’s familiar.
Act 2: Initiation
This is the messy middle.
- Challenges
- Obstacles
- Growth
- Doubt
This is where you become the person who can handle the journey.
Act 3: Return
You come back changed.
With:
- Wisdom
- Strength
- Insight
And something to offer the world.
Real Talk: I’m in It Too
This podcast?
This is a hero’s journey.
Never done it before.
Don’t fully know what I’m doing.
Definitely a little terrified.
And doing it anyway.
That’s the work.
Your First Tool: The Journal (Your Hero’s Companion)
If you take one thing from this episode, let it be this:
Start a journal.
Not because it’s trendy.
Because it works.
Your journal is where you:
- Process fear
- Capture insights
- Tell yourself the truth
- Track your growth
And most importantly:
Find your own answers
How to Start (Even If You’re Resisting)
If you don’t want to journal?
Perfect.
Start there:
- “Why am I resisting this?”
- “What’s coming up for me right now?”
That is the work.
