07. Yeah, I'm a hard pass
Ever Said “No” to Something You Knew You Wanted?
Not because you didn’t want it…
But because:
- It felt too risky
- The timing wasn’t right
- You weren’t sure you could handle it
So you said:
“Yeah… I’m gonna pass.”
Today’s episode is all about refusing the call – aka – saying no to our dreams.
Saying no to the call is so normal, that it’s literally it’s own step in the hero’s journey!
In this episode, I’ll share:
- The 3 categories of refusal (number 1 is my usual go to)
- The cost of refusing the call to your dreams
- Reframes & tools you can use when refusing the call.

“Yeah… I’m a Hard Pass Right Now” — The Truth About Refusing the Call (and Why It Matters)
Ever Said “No” to Something You Knew You Wanted?
Not because you didn’t want it…
But because:
- It felt too risky
- The timing wasn’t right
- You weren’t sure you could handle it
So you said:
“Yeah… I’m gonna pass.”
Even though something inside you whispered:
“This matters.”
What This Episode Is Really About
This episode dives into a powerful (and often hidden) stage of the Hero’s Journey:
The Refusal of the Call
It’s what happens after you feel the pull toward something bigger…
…and choose not to go.
Why Refusing the Call Is So Common
Let’s normalize this:
Almost everyone refuses the call at some point.
You can have:
- The dream
- The opportunity
- The opening
…and still say no.
Not because you’re lazy.
Not because you don’t care.
But because:
You’re human.
Real Talk: A Personal Example
For years, Pauline wanted to start her own business.
And she did what most people do:
- Tried a few versions
- Got some traction
- Then… stopped
Why?
- Before kids: fear
- After kids: responsibility
Same dream.
Different reasons.
Still a “no.”
The Hard Truth (According to Joseph Campbell)
Refusing the call leads to:
Stagnation
Because when you stay in the known:
- Life becomes repetitive
- Growth slows down
- Aliveness fades
That’s the trade-off.
The 3 Reasons We Refuse the Call
If you’ve ever said no to something big, it usually falls into one of these:
1. Fear of Leaving the Familiar
You don’t want to leave what’s comfortable.
Examples:
- Bilbo Baggins (loved the Shire, avoided adventure)
- Marlin (fear-driven, avoided risk at all costs)
Safety > growth
2. Sense of Duty to Others
You feel responsible.
Examples:
- Luke Skywalker (stayed for family obligations)
- Moana (torn between calling and leadership duty)
Obligation > desire
3. Disbelief or Unworthiness
You don’t think you have what it takes.
Examples:
- Harry Potter (initial disbelief)
- Neo (resisted being “the one”)
Doubt > possibility
Here’s the Twist: The Journey Doesn’t End There
In almost every story…
The hero still goes.
But not always by choice.
When you refuse the call long enough, life often steps in and says:
“Cool. We’re doing this anyway.”
When Life Forces the Journey
This can look like:
- Losing the job you were afraid to leave
- A health wake-up call
- A relationship ending
- A situation becoming unbearable
You didn’t choose the leap.
The leap chose you.
The Risk of Saying No Too Long
Refusing once? Normal.
Refusing forever?
That’s where regret lives.
According to Bronnie Ware, one of the top regrets of the dying is:
“I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself…”
That’s the cost of never answering the call.
The Reframe You Need
Refusing the call isn’t wrong.
But it is a decision with consequences.
So instead of judging yourself, ask:
Why am I saying no?
Be honest:
- Is it fear?
- Responsibility?
- Self-doubt?
Clarity changes everything.
How to Refuse the Call Without Losing Yourself
If now isn’t the time, don’t panic.
But don’t abandon yourself either.
1. Be Honest About Your Reason
No stories. No fluff.
Just truth.
2. Accept the Trade-Off
If you stay:
You’re choosing stability over expansion (for now)
Own that choice.
3. Keep the Dream Alive
Ask:
- What small steps can I take now?
- How can I prepare for the next opportunity?
4. Set a Timeline
Don’t let “not now” become “never.”
Decide when you’ll revisit it
5. Be Ready for Life to Intervene
Sometimes you don’t get infinite chances.
Doors close.
Opportunities shift.
Or life pushes you forward anyway.
Your Most Powerful Tool: The Journal
When you’re in resistance, don’t ignore it.
Write it out.
Journal prompts:
- What am I afraid of right now?
- What’s stopping me from saying yes?
- What would it take for me to feel ready?
Because:
You don’t need more information
You need more honesty
Final Truth
You can say no.
You can wait.
You can choose the familiar.
But know this:
Your aliveness lives on the other side of “yes”
Final Takeaway
You don’t need to leap today.
But don’t lie to yourself about why you’re not.
And don’t forget:
The life you want is still waiting for your answer.
