The Sweet Reward — How Facing Your Inner Dragon Leads to Breakthroughs 🍯🐉

🚨 Feeling Stuck After a Big Leap? Here’s Why Rewards Matter

You’ve faced a fear.

You’ve stared down a monster—maybe it’s a limiting belief, a gut-wrenching decision, or a life-changing leap. And now… crickets.

Where’s the payoff?

Here’s the truth: every ordeal has a reward.

Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it sneaks up on you—but it’s always there.

In this episode of Be Your Own Dang Hero, we dig into the sweet spot of the hero’s journey: the reward.

By the end, you’ll understand why daring to leap—even scared out of your mind—is the fastest way to breakthroughs, trust yourself, and actually enjoy the adventure.

🏆 The Reward Isn’t Just Dessert—It’s the Whole Point

Think about your biggest life breakthroughs.

How many came after taking a leap that terrified you? For me, it was after having my first child:

  • I returned from maternity leave and got a major promotion.
  • It felt like everything I’d worked for—but it didn’t fit anymore.
  • I was a new mom, scared, anxious, and guilty.
  • So I made the bold choice: I quit.
  •

The result? A part-time dream job that let me work in my field and be present for my kids. That was my reward: not just the job, but the trust I gained in myself and the universe.

💡 Mindset shift: rewards follow courage. The leap you’re scared to take is the key to your next-level life.

📚 Rewards in the Hero’s Journey Context

Following Joseph Campbell’s framework and Christopher Vogler’s The Writer’s Journey, the reward comes after the ordeal—but it’s not always what you expect.

Types of Rewards 🎁

  1. Physical – a new job, a car, a relationship, a tangible prize.
    • Example: Wesley rescues Buttercup in Princess Bride and earns love and victory.
  2. Psychological/Emotional – new perception, wisdom, or self-trust.
    • Example: Harry Potter learns to see through deception in The Sorcerer’s Stone.
  3. Self-Realization & Epiphany – rising to a higher version of yourself.
    • Example: Aragorn becomes king in Lord of the Rings.
    • Example: Luke masters the Force and overcomes his dark side.

💡 Mindset shift: not every reward is a thing.

Some are insights, confidence, or clarity that set you up for your next adventure.

🔑 Real-Life Takeaways: Savor the Rewards

  • Celebrate. Seriously. Give yourself a high-five, throw a tiny dance party, or jot down the wins.
  • Practice gratitude. Track at least one thing you received or accomplished each day.
  • Trust in leaps. Every risk you take can yield a tangible or intangible reward.
  • Recognize the currencies of your rewards: physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological.

💡 Prompt: Think back to your last leap. What reward did it bring you, expected or unexpected? Write it down. Feel it. Celebrate it.

⚡ Why This Matters

When you start seeing rewards as inevitable—sometimes obvious, sometimes mysterious—you:

  • Stop fearing leaps into the unknown
  • Build confidence to face bigger challenges
  • Create an upward spiral of daring actions → bigger rewards
  •

Your hero’s journey is happening right now. Your inner dragon is waiting. And yes—there’s a reward on the other side.
