21. Homecomings & returns
You’ve Changed… Now What?
You’ve faced your monsters, survived the ordeal, and claimed your reward.
But here’s the kicker: the final test of the hero’s journey isn’t the adventure itself—it’s what you do once you return.
Whether it’s a life-changing trip, a health journey, or a parenting transformation, you come back with new insights, skills, and perspectives.
The big question is:
Do you share these gifts, sell them, or keep them to yourself?
In this episode of Be Your Own Dang Hero, we explore the third act of the hero’s journey—the return and homecoming—and how to confidently integrate your growth into the world around you.

Returns & Homecomings — Bringing Your Hero’s Gifts Back to the World

The Three Paths After a Journey
Joseph Campbell and Christopher Vogler outline three main ways heroes return:
- Keep it to yourself – You’ve unlocked wisdom, but fear judgment or feel the world isn’t ready. Sometimes just being a better version of yourself is enough to inspire others.
- Share for profit – You take your knowledge and sell it, like health transformations or productivity hacks. There’s nothing wrong with commerce—it can amplify impact.
- Share intentionally – You find the right people to help, creating meaningful, intimate impact without commercialization.
Mindset shift: there’s no “wrong” way.
The key is aligning with your purpose and values while bringing your gifts back in a way that works for you.
Real-Life Integration Challenges
Returning isn’t just about choosing a path—it’s about reintegration.
You’ve changed, but the world hasn’t. That tension creates real challenges:
- Feeling like people won’t understand your new routines, habits, or beliefs
- Fear of judgment when sharing new knowledge
- Hesitation to act because your insights feel too radical or personal
- Balancing impact with self-preservation
Mindset shift: integration is a practice. You don’t have to announce your transformation loudly—your presence, confidence, and example can speak volumes.
Tools for a Successful Return
1. Confidence Anchors
- Affirmations like: “I have knowledge that can help the world,” or “I can share in a way that feels right for me.”
- Helps reduce fear of judgment and reinforces clarity of purpose.
2. Observe Before You Share
- Watch how your insights land before going all-in
- Choose the right audience or context for maximum impact
3. Follow Your Joy & Impact
- Commerce is fine, intimacy is fine, keeping it private is fine
- The guiding question: How can I leave the world better than I found it?
Hero’s Journey in Real Life
Think of your journey as a story: you’ve leveled up, faced challenges, and acquired treasures. The return is the final chapter:
- What will you do with what you’ve gained?
- How will your new self impact your relationships, work, or community?
- Can you leave the world a better place than you found it?
Prompt: Identify one insight or skill you’ve gained from a personal journey. How could sharing it, intentionally or subtly, improve someone else’s life?
