The Hardest Part Is Starting — Why Crossing the Threshold Feels So Damn Hard (and How to Actually Do It)
You Know You Need to Change… So Why Haven’t You Started?
You feel it in your gut.
Something’s off.
Your life works… but it doesn’t fit.
You’ve thought about leaving. Starting. Shifting. Choosing something bigger.
And yet?
You stall.
You overthink.
You go back and forth like it’s your full-time job.
Welcome to the most frustrating, underrated, and human part of the journey:
Starting.
Not dreaming about it.
Not planning it.
Actually. Starting.
The Real Reason Starting Feels So Hard
According to Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, this phase sits right between:
- Refusing the call
- Answering it
And here’s the truth no one tells you:
You don’t just decide once.
You decide…
Then panic.
Then undecide.
Then re-decide.
It’s messy.
It’s not linear.
And it’s completely normal.
The Two Steps No One Talks About
Starting isn’t one moment—it’s two:
Inner Acceptance (Supernatural Aid)
This is the quiet, internal moment where you admit:
“I want something different.”
No action yet.
No announcement.
Just truth.
And here’s the wild part:
Once you fully commit internally, things start shifting.
- Opportunities show up
- People enter your life
- Ideas click into place
That’s what Campbell calls Supernatural Aid—support that appears after you decide.
Outer Acceptance (Crossing the Threshold)
This is where things get real.
You:
- Quit the job
- End the relationship
- Move cities
- Hit publish
- Say the thing
This is the moment where you leave the known world… and step into the unknown.
And yeah—it’s terrifying.
Why the Threshold Feels So Intense
A threshold isn’t just a step.
It’s a line between two identities.
You’re not just doing something new—
you’re becoming someone new.
That’s why it feels like:
- Standing at the edge of a cliff
- Leaving everything familiar behind
- Not knowing if you’ll land or fall
This is where most people stop.
Not because they can’t…
…but because it feels like too much.
Meet Your Threshold Guardians
Right before you start?
You’ll meet resistance.
Not random resistance—targeted resistance.
In the Hero’s Journey, these are called threshold guardians.
They show up as:
- “I can’t afford it”
- “What will people think?”
- “What if I fail?”
- “What if I succeed and can’t handle it?”
Or even:
- That one person who doubts you
- That job that suddenly gets “comfortable”
- That fear that feels like truth
These aren’t stop signs.
They’re tests.
They’re asking:
“Are you serious about this?”
Real Talk: What This Actually Looks Like
You’re in a relationship that doesn’t fit anymore.
You know it.
Your body knows it.
But your brain?
- “It’s not that bad.”
- “What if I regret it?”
- “I’ll be alone.”
So you stay.
Until one day, something shifts.
You don’t have a perfect plan…
but you finally say:
“I can’t keep living like this.”
And then weird things start happening:
- You meet new people
- Opportunities open up
- You find a way out
Not because you figured everything out…
…but because you committed.
The Reframe That Changes Everything
Starting isn’t about having a plan.
It’s about making a decision your nervous system can barely tolerate…
…and doing it anyway.
You don’t need certainty.
You need commitment.
Because clarity doesn’t come before action.
It comes from it.
Tools to Help You Actually Start
No fluff. Just what works.
Ask This Daily: “What Do I Actually Want?”
Not what’s practical.
Not what’s expected.
What do you want?
Do this every day for a week (or a month if you’re brave).
Watch what changes.
Rewire Fear → Excitement
Your body processes fear and excitement the same way.
The difference?
The story you tell yourself.
Next time you feel fear:
- Don’t back off
- Say: “This is excitement”
- Take one small action anyway
Make Space (Seriously)
You can’t start something new in a life that’s full of what’s outdated.
Clear:
- Old commitments
- Draining relationships
- Physical clutter
- Identity clutter (yes, that’s a thing)
Make room for the next version of you.
Build Self-Trust First
If you don’t trust yourself, you won’t start.
Try this:
- Make one small promise daily
- Keep it
That’s how you rebuild trust with yourself.
Name Your Fear (Your Real One)
Not the surface excuse.
The real one.
Ask:
- What am I actually afraid of?
- Where does this show up in my body?
- When is it strongest?
Awareness weakens it.
Remember: You’ve Done This Before
Every hard thing you’ve survived?
That was a threshold.
You’re not new to this.
You’re just forgetting.
Plan the Celebration NOW
Don’t wait until later.
Define:
- What counts as “starting”
- How you’ll celebrate it
Because this step?
It’s the hardest one.
And it deserves to be honored.
The Truth Most People Avoid
You’re not stuck because you don’t know what to do.
You’re stuck because:
You haven’t fully decided yet.
And that’s okay.
But don’t confuse hesitation with confusion.
Ready to Cross Your Threshold?
This episode breaks down exactly how to:
- Stop circling the decision
- Move from internal commitment → real action
- Face the fear without letting it run the show
