This is one of the most important episodes (imo) – because transitions are fundamental to the human experience and yet rarely talked about.

Get in My Belly — How to Survive Life’s Transitions Without Losing Yourself

What This Episode Is Really About
In this episode of Be Your Own Dang Hero, we unpack one of the trickiest, most transformative phases of the hero’s journey:
The belly of the whale—the in-between moments when your old identity dies and your new one is emerging
You’ll learn:
- Why getting what you want doesn’t always feel like joy right away
- What the “belly of the whale” really is and why it matters
- How to navigate the gray space between endings and beginnings
- Practical tools to help you let go, embrace uncertainty, and move forward
The Belly of the Whale: What It Really Means
Most people think transformation is instant. It’s not.
It’s messy, confusing, and often terrifying. Joseph Campbell calls this phase the belly of the whale:
- The Moment of Transition
- A door closes (your old life)
- A new door opens (your next life)
- But in between? There’s a gray area where you’re neither here nor there
- A door closes (your old life)
- Self-Annihilation is Necessary
- You must release the old version of yourself to make space for the new one
- Example: going from a kid-free adult to a new parent requires letting go of selfish tendencies to fully embrace your new role
- You must release the old version of yourself to make space for the new one
- It’s Not Optional—But It Can Be Graceful
- Not everyone recognizes this phase
- But awareness makes it shorter and less painful
- Not everyone recognizes this phase
The Real Struggle: Resistance vs. Flow
You might notice:
- You keep thinking about your old life
- You feel resentment or grief for what’s gone
- You resist fully stepping into your new identity
This resistance is normal. It’s the “belly” testing your courage and willingness to let go.
Why the Gray Area Feels So Awful
- We fear the unknown
- We fear loss, failure, even metaphorical “death” of the self
- Every step into the unknown builds courage—not conceptually, but experientially
The Plot Twist: Transformation Comes at a Price… But It Works
- You won’t be the same person after this period
- That’s the point
- Your old identity dies so your new, bigger, more heroic self can emerge
Think: Gandalf the Grey → Gandalf the White
Or Luke Skywalker leaving old Luke behind to become a Jedi
Tools to Navigate Transitions
- Awareness – Recognize that you are in a transition; it normalizes the discomfort
- Meditation – Programs like Ziva Meditation help you find calm amid chaos
- Give Yourself Grace – Feeling lost or frustrated doesn’t mean failure
- Journaling Prompts – Ask: What am I resisting? What do I truly want?
- Read Transitions by William Bridges – A practical framework for navigating life’s in-between moments
Important Truth: You’re Not Alone
Transitions are universal but rarely discussed. Knowing this gives you perspective, reduces shame, and makes the gray area feel more like a sacred process than a punishment.
Final Takeaway
If you feel swallowed up by your current life, overwhelmed by change, or uncertain about the future:
You are in the belly of the whale.
And the question isn’t: “Why does this feel so awful?”
The question is: “Am I willing to let the old die so the new can emerge?”
